![]() A Veritable “Wall of Text”
Including lengthy blocks of text in pictures is dumb. If you’re making the decision to submit your work as an image file, you should probably try to fill it up with as many images as possible. This seems like this should be common sense, right? Not for deviant “eclipse-of-you,” it isn’t! Beautiful Songs by ~eclipse-of-youI know what you’re thinking: “Is this a picture or an essay?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is deviantART, the most obnoxious user-generated content service in the world, and can make you want to blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Does it really matter? Well, does it, punk? The short answer to the first question is that it is, in fact, a picture. The presence of the text – which consists of lyrics to populist pop music garbage – serves to distract from how poorly illustrated the female(?) character is. With a head as large as her torso, and feet half the size of her tiny hands, I guess music must be her only escape from the hardships of life as a hideous freak of nature. A general rule of thumb for dealing with pictures “plus words”: If it looks like more time went into writing the text than drawing the illustrated portion of the piece, chances are it was done to mask some horrendous artistic error. Judging from the fact that the songs have little (If not nothing at all) to do with one other, and how the headphones manage to fit entirely within the spiked blob that composes the girl’s hair (As if the artist hadn’t originally planned to include them), I’d say the “music” angle was an afterthought, and that this piece started simply as a failed drawing of a girl. Not only does eclipse-of-you fail to impress as an illustrator, but she isn’t much of a typographer either. My best advice to her is to stay away from both, and instead of scribbling lame shit like this in class, to actually pay attention and focus on her academics. After all, it’s obvious she won’t be making it big as an artist any time soon. And that’s all the text I’m willing to write about this. 14 Responses to “A Veritable “Wall of Text””Leave a Reply |

Before we start this article, let me state that I realize the irony of writing up a “wall of text” to criticize someone else for writing up their own wall of text. I justify it like this: You – our loyal fans / enraged tartlets – come to this site expecting to see lengthy write-ups and lines upon lines of text. On the other hand, when you head over to deviantART, you expect to see illustrations and other assorted visual media. (Yes, I am aware deviantART can host fan fiction, but who the fuck actually comes to dA specifically to read that

The typography is beyond saving.
Well, I do enjoy a good laugh now, and then, so thank you very much for this!
Honestly, if you were trying to make me quit art, or feel bad about my art, your attempt failed miserably. In truth, I know my art could improve a lot, and that I could do more to improve it, but I do art not for popularity, or for other people’s pleasure, I do it for myself. I mainly draw for fun, so I really don’t care that much about what other people think. I know I’m not the best artist around, and I know I never will be, so there really isn’t any need for being so rude about it. Also, you failed to mention what type of art this is, which, in fact, is anime/manga, a style in which things aren’t always properly proportioned. But whatever floats your boat.
This was probably my favorite paragraph:
“Not only does eclipse-of-you fail to impress as an illustrator, but she isn’t much of a typographer either. My best advice to her is to stay away from both, and instead of scribbling lame shit like this in class, to actually pay attention and focus on her academics. I never said I ever wanted to be an illustrator, or a typographer. Also, “My best advice to her is to stay away from both, and instead of scribbling lame shit like this in class, to actually pay attention and focus on her academics. After all, it’s obvious she won’t be making it big as an artist any time soon.” is a bit offensive/rude to say, because nowhere on any of my pages of deviantART did I mention I wanted to be an artist. It’s also quite rude because you know nothing about my school life, and therefore, you shouldn’t go making assumptions that I “scribble lame shit in class” and never pay attention to my academics. I’ll have you know I didn’t do this in school, and that I am an honors student. Don’t go making assumptions about someone when you know virtually nothing about them.
Last but not least, there are a lot of worse artists on deviantART(you are probably included in that)so don’t go judging people. What you are doing is not critique, or constructive criticism, it’s rude, so if I were you, I would stop it all together. My best advice to you is to get yourself off the computer, and try doing this kind of stuff to someone’s face(I’d pay to see that). After all, it’s obvious you won’t be making it big as an online art critic anytime soon.
Sincerely,
eclipse-of-you.
And that’s all the text I’m willing to write about this/you.
@eclipse-of-you: tl;dr
If you found this funny why are you defending yourself?
Oh and the headphone ear piece is facing forward: not at an angle
@Eric
Oh, yeah, that too.
@Cleo: I’m amazed at the fact that one of our readers actually knows how to draw. The idea of it fucking floors me.
@Habermann:
You kidding me? I love this kinda stuff! I’ve been following since the whole raccoon entry!
And thank you for the compliment, it means a whole lot more from you than most people!
@Eclipse: Critiqued your newer piece through notes.
@Mishi: As someone who also can’t draw worth a damn, thanks a lot.
@Hbomberguy:
Laaaate reply is late, I know but WOW! Thank you so much! Its creepy those were the colours I was thinking in my mind as I doodled! I don’t think you butchered it!
@Mishi:
I think I might come and lurk there using my main account! I did not know such a glorious group existed!
